The Home as a Healing Environment
When I left my previous home, I wasn't simply moving house.
I was searching for somewhere I could finally exhale.
Before I unpacked a single box or hung a picture on the wall, I carried out a simple ritual of my own. I cleansed the space, offered a blessing of protection and placed carefully chosen stones around the boundary of my home.
To someone else those actions may have seemed symbolic. To me, they marked a turning point.
They were my way of saying, "This is my safe place."
Looking back, I don't think it was the ritual itself that changed me. It was what the ritual represented.
Peace. Permission. A new beginning. Only then did the house begin to feel like home.
We often think of healing as something that happens within us, but I wonder whether it also depends on where we are?
Our nervous systems are extraordinary. They constantly scan the world around us, picking up on tiny cues, asking a simple question:
"Am I safe here?"
Safety takes many forms. It may mean feeling physically secure, emotionally settled or simply knowing that you've stepped into a space where you don't have to be "on guard." After a difficult day at work, during periods of stress, while navigating illness, loss or major life changes, home can become more than somewhere we live. It should be the place where we allow ourselves to rest, reflect and begin to recover.
Perhaps this is when healing really begins. Not because all our stresses have disappeared, but because our bodies finally feel ‘safe’ enough to address them or begin to let them go.
For me, a home is much more than bricks, timber and furniture. It is the place where we recover from the world. That is why I believe our homes deserve as much care as our bodies.
My Home Energetics assessments are intended to help your home become a place that better supports rest, recovery and everyday wellbeing by working with the energetic qualities of the property.
Drawing on my own training and practice, I assess the energetic qualities of a property and consider whether they may form part of the overall picture of wellbeing. I don't see this work as replacing practical, medical or psychological approaches. Rather, it is another way of exploring the relationship between people and the places they call home.
Whether or not a home is influencing its occupants is ultimately something each person must decide for themselves. My role is to offer an assessment, share my findings and, where appropriate, work with the property in a way that reflects my practice and experience. The stones I placed around my own house are still there today.
Some people may see them simply as beautiful objects. Others may see them as symbols of protection. Their meaning isn't something I need anyone else to share. For me, they are a quiet reminder that this is a place where I choose peace.
A place where healing was finally given permission to begin.
Because I've come to believe that before we can truly heal, we first need somewhere that feels safe enough to let us.
