Why Do People Come to Reiki?
People come to Reiki for many different reasons. Some are feeling overwhelmed by stress or simply need time to switch off. Others are navigating periods of change, recovering from illness alongside conventional medical care, or looking for space to reconnect with themselves. Whatever brings you here, Reiki isn't about replacing healthcare. It's about creating an opportunity to pause, rest and support your overall wellbeing.

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive complementary therapy suitable for people at every stage of life. It is based on the traditional principle that the practitioner channels energy through their hands to support the body's natural capacity for healing and promote physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
The Japanese word Reiki is commonly translated as universal life energy. Developed by Mikao Usui in Japan during the early twentieth century, Reiki draws on a concept found in many cultures: that a vital life energy flows through all living things.
Today, Reiki is practised throughout the UK and around the world. It may be used alongside conventional medical care or as a standalone wellbeing practice, but it is not a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment.
Reiki does not rely on belief or faith to be received. Whether or not you understand how it works, the experience of Reiki is the same. Many people simply describe leaving a treatment feeling calmer, more balanced and deeply relaxed.

So.... How Might Reiki Work?
One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "How does Reiki actually work?" The honest answer is that no one knows for certain.
The traditional explanation is that Reiki practitioners channel universal life energy through their hands. Alongside this, scientists have spent several decades investigating whether measurable biological effects occur during Reiki treatments.
Some studies have reported that experienced Reiki practitioners emit weak measurable electromagnetic or biomagnetic signals from their hands. Researchers have suggested that these signals may interact with the body's own electrical and magnetic systems, potentially influencing normal cellular communication and repair. Similar principles are already used in established medical technologies, including pulsed electromagnetic field therapies used to support bone healing.
While these findings do not fully explain Reiki, they provide scientifically testable hypotheses that continue to be investigated. Human biology is extraordinarily complex, and it is entirely possible that multiple biological and psychological mechanisms contribute to the experience and effects reported by people receiving Reiki.
If you're interested in exploring the evidence, I've brought together a collection of accessible peer-reviewed research on my References and Research page, allowing you to draw your own conclusions.

What Happens During a Reiki Treatment?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive complementary therapy that can usually be adapted to suit people of all ages and many different circumstances. Before your first treatment, we'll spend a little time discussing your health, your reasons for coming, and any questions you may have, so I can tailor the session to your individual needs.
You'll then relax fully clothed on a comfortable treatment couch, or sit in a chair if you prefer, while I gently place my hands on or just above different areas of your body. During the treatment, you may notice warmth, tingling, deep relaxation or emotional release, while others simply experience a profound sense of rest. And if you happen to fall asleep or snore, I take it as a compliment!
Your first appointment lasts around an hour and a quarter, allowing time for your consultation as well as approximately 45 minutes of Reiki. Follow-up appointments are shorter and can be adapted to meet your individual needs.
Many people find that three or four treatments, weekly or fortnightly, are enough to achieve what they are looking for, while others choose to continue with occasional sessions as part of their regular self-care and wellbeing.
Whether you're seeking support for a particular challenge or simply time to rest and reconnect, my aim is to provide a calm, welcoming space where your wellbeing comes first
